An Affair to Remember: Churches in Postmodern Dialogues
The Church and the Postmodern: flash-in-the-pan hubris or Copernican revolution?
Through their Scholarship scheme, the English Speaking Union is funding this piece of research into the self-understanding of UK and US-based churches who claim to engage in postmodern cultures. Whilst there has been a significant amount of research into this area, it has focused upon the outward expressions of these groups and tended toward partisan conclusions (Gibbs & Bolger, 2005; Davison & Milbank, 2010).
The purpose of this study is to attempt to go beneath the outward forms and beyond the ecclesial politics in order to investigate the beliefs and hopes expressed by those involved in practicing church within postmodern cultures. It is my hope that, in portraying this movement as accurately as possible, this resource will inform the enormous decisions being made by all denominations and independent churches as they seek to understand how best to provide ministry within the changing cultures of the West.
